It is controlled by the people on the sub. they can do a single ping or a variable ping of different times. There is no set time. Pinging is bad so it is seldom done.

Thanks Brian, and you are correct. I was just wondering the repetition rate used in movies, etc. I think it's 3 seconds, just was not sure.
