how should i paint the alfa? is it all black? or is it 2-tone colored like i've seen dave, smalley, and others paint it? in my brief research it appeared that no one knew the right colors, so they just picked some randomly or made their best guess. heck, i remember seeing one guy with a black top and green bottom. any color suggestions?
alfa colors?

If you want to go
If you want to go with the best guess theory I would recommend you model it close to Dave Merriman's paint job found on the ThorDesign website. Dave has already proven his ability to guess accurately with the creeper motors on the Alpha.
(personally I doubt that he actually guesses)

On the colors of the
On the colors of the lower part of the Alfa,
This information comes from my friend Sergey, who used to be an Alfa officer.
The lower hull was different colors over different periods.
Black,Green, and the usual primer Red are all correct.

I remember Sergey telling me
I remember Sergey telling me ,in particular, that the green paint contained a poison that thwarted the growth of marine life, like barnacles. Although I got the impression all of the colors had the poison.
David Merrimen's Alfa has an awsome paint job on it. I notice he even changed the shade of the lower paint to respresent the sonar dome, which is also correct.
Before I got the pictures of the Alfa in drydock, I showed Sergey a picture of David's boat. He pointed out some small differences, which,at the time,we did not know. But he was very impressed as to the detail and quality of Matt Thor's kit.
Overall, the Thor Alfa is so close, it was a major contibution to the hobby. It was not that long ago,the existance of even the bow planes was not certain. Matt was 100% dead on about the bow planes, the creeper motors, and the shape of the prop and attenuator.
A major accomplishment I think, and thanks Matt, for going to the hard work it takes to change the kit to reflect these things.
