NR-1 Model presented to former Engineer - Mike Reigel in Dark Waters

    Hi guys,
An interesting note for those who know him...] the reactor shut down due to an electrical failure and Mike had less than one hour to fashion a relay out of spare parts as there were no spare relays, so that the reactor could be started without having to endure a potentially catastrophic cold start. He did it and the reactor started safely and he was responsible for getting Rickover's super-secret-spy-sub out of trouble. Nowadays, Mike, who was also the Captain of the USS Kentucky Ohio class submarine, is now the executive director at the Nautilus Memorial Museum and is there most every day. For those that know him and lost track of him, now you know where to find him. He was very appreciative upon seeing the model and has always wanted an NR-1 for some time as some of you already know.

In any case for the old timer SC'ers like myself I wanted to make note here that Mike's NR-1 has finally come into port.

    Excellent! Glad to see that

Excellent! Glad to see that old promise from the Subcommittee's first EC administration (Hart/Palifka) fulllfilled finally. CAPT Mike Reigel I am sure is very happy.

        Hi Steve,

        Thanks, yes it has

        Hi Steve,

Thanks, yes it has been a long time you are RIGHT! There was no one person at fault... just the kind of thing that happens within an organization sometimes.

And Chuck! Do that Halibut. I had to make one a few years ago for RC. It was GREAT. I loved that model but we were shooting indoors in a rebar-filled concrete walled pool and the signal skipped so badly that we had to get our shots by towing it along by hand on fishing line! Low tech but it worked QUITE well. I had just wanted the challenge of making a good looking Halibut in a 4 week timeframe... of course it also had to WORK... Well, two out of three aint bad I guess... hee hee.

Cant wait to see what you come up with for Halibut! I wish I still had the plans and all to share but I gave them all back after we were done.

plans what plans where did they go back to go ahead tell me and you will have to a keel me he he

I know I am getting pressure from all sides to get the hull started the sail and hanger masters are nearly done its just a matter of getting room in the shop too many boats and so little time its getting to the point that I am turning work away something I am not comfortable with but time lines are time lines right

I will post photos of the master soon
