I was watching an early episode of Jag this morning, and they had a ton of Hunt for Red October footage. They tried to pass off an Ohio, Alfa, and Typhoon underwater as a LA class flight II.
Have you ever noticed in Crimson tide there are several shots of the rear of the Ohio submerged and you see the towed sonar array housing on the Port side of the hull at the back. In other views in the same movie you see it on the starboard side. Also there is one shot as the boat is submerging in the beginning of the patrol where they actually show film of a 688...
It's amazing how often they use the wrong film. News broad casts of that November Class Russian sub that sank a couple of months ago continuously showed a typhoon.
I sell this footage for a living (including out takes from "Hunt for Red October" as well as TONS of other contemporary and archival military footage)... Just so you know, as a military/history buff, on the salesman side of things I always strive to make sure that the footage we send is militarily accurate...

By the way, I am new to this site (and to sub modelling...can't wait for my RG VIIC to show)... I'm an armor and sci fi modeller, but have always loved subs --- looks like that RG VIIC is gonna make a sub modeler out of me!!! Yuse guys have a great website!!!!!!!
Good to be aboard and amongst such a seasoned crew. I will probably have a number of novice-level questions for you salts, soon!
I'm hoping that I can not only bring my not-very-nautical skills to bear on the VIIC (if it EVER shows up in the mail ) but hopefully encourage others my local club, the LA Miniaturists, to take an interest in subs as well... I know from experience that seeing a well built model of a subject I really have no interest in can quickly turn that around!!
And indeed, I will continue to fight for truth, justice and accuracy in stock footage!!
Trust me, the waiting is the hardest part. I got my first sub in Feb, its still in the yard, and just got a second one as well. Its all downhill from the first one.
