    Potential Thesis / Build Idea

Hey! Stumbled upon this forum while doing some research!

I have my master thesis coming up, and I'm doing some research regarding possible topics. One idea that I've had is to create a deep-water submarine, equip it with a bunch of sensors and use it to scan and map the seafloor (don't know all the technical details yet). What do you submarine experts think of this? Do you know anyone who has done similar projects? Is it possible to buy a more "serious" RC submarine that could be used for such a project, or how would one proceed with building something rigid enough?

    Thankful for your input.

I honestly do not know how to answer you.
My suggestion, spend a little time looking through the threads here. How do you control it? Radio? You would have to overcome transmission of radio signals in salt water not to mention depth. Using a tether would be one solution then I would point you to ROV sites. Our subs run in shallow water (fresh water for the most part, some run brackish) maximum depth most run in is less than 8 feet with even more run in the 1 - 2 foot range. We run in that depth not because our submarines cannot go deeper, but mainly keep visual contact on the sub.
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

Try a google search of Sea Gliders.

What you are describing is a long career path. Way more than a thesis! There are no short cuts and no one to hand you all of that.

Could wangle a job at the deep, freshwater testing station the Navy runs out in Bayview, ID. Sounds like the exact career path you want to be involved in.

Check out https://bluerobotics.com/. They use an open-source Arduino controller that may be able to tackle some of what you're asking the ROV to do.
