Just asking,,,,sure someone did that,,,Complete Propel can in sub!

did anyone ever mounted a complete Propel Can in their sub , instead of making a copper cylinder,,,,!
if not, why?

Many Moon ago, i had installed in a OTW 1/24 Type XXIII, a HP system, based on Spare Air diver rescue unit, that I install in a DE WTC!!...using the blow and vent original system, I did a mechanical lever to simulate diver breath to depress the mini Scuba valve i had adjusted with mininal flow,,,,,,Now no longer in the diving field and as I needed a Scuba tank to fill up, plus dragging to closest dive shop,,etc etc
Maybe good idea to put the boat back in water too!!
So , I just removed the mod and small 1.7cft scuba bottle,,,,,, and have room basically to put a Propel bottle in that location and run a tube back to the original system... On the bright side. it will get lot of lift when the can is empty too!..Suspect trimming will be fun too!!!

One thing I can think of that will need to be over come.

As the Propel is used up, you will gain positive buoyancy in the from the emptying can.
Some how, the positive buoyancy will need to be counteracted.

A separate ballast tank that could be flooded slowly on command maybe.

For a Propel-based ballast system that is always the case. Using an actual can of Propel, being much larger than the typical copper pipe-based tank, will see this effect to a much large effect.

I saw a boat back in the 90s that did this. I can't recall who's it was, or where.
Isn't this the same sort of thing that anyone running with CO2 (using a fire extinguisher type vessel) would run into? Jim B, on his Gato/Balao, or Gene B on his Gato/Balao...I think those are pretty substantial sized tanks...

The difference with using CO2 is that you get a much higher level of expansion going from liquid to gas, which means that the impact to the buoyancy is far less than with Propel. I've seen Jim run his Batfish over a two-day SubRegatta weekend without refilling the CO2 bottle and the difference in the surfaced waterline from start of the weekend to the end was barely noticeable.

Hp system i used was a Spare air Scuba tank, of 1.77cuft@ 3000psi compressed air,, no Co2 !! no shit! i modified the regulator head with a lever actuated valve that was attached to a front ballast bulkhead,,,and use DE valve/bleed actuator rod,,,,the trick difficult part was the adjustement for the flow,,,so had to use trim to lesser servo travel in most case,,,..
Need to be diver to have tank fill up,,and it was not a cheap set up!--at that time, i worked in that field,,,,now, not anymore plus dragging a full scuba tank and tranfert hardware,,was fine, as at that time, was the safety recovery diver at the pond we used! lol.. worked great and you could do a lot of *emergency clear ballast* in less than 1 sec! ...made lots of bubble too! lol...
