Skipjack SSN and George Washington SSBN

    Hi Folks,

All of the references I can find have the beam of the Skipjacks' at 31 feet 7 inches and the George Washingtons' at 33 feet. These same sources state that the USS George Washington was made from the hull of a Skipjack that had been laid down but not completed yet. How can the beams differ? Also, who makes the best scale sub plan?

    Regards,

    Mark Meredith IS1 (SW) Ret.

    Maybe, I can help.
I was on the GW in the yards and crawled all over that boat.

The boat used to make the GW was from the Scorpion which was under construction but not mated up.
The missile section was 33' in diameter and 130' in length.
The missile section started just after of the navigation center in the back of the control room.
Looking on the outside, this would be about where the after edge of the new sail was.
Going from the nag center to the missile section if you looked up at the hull and frames you could see the hull jump cone.

The after jump was just aft of the missile compartment, in the machinery space. (O2 generator and high pressure compressor)
About 12' forward of the aft missile deck hatch.

The bow section, missile section and aft section where aligned on the keel.
A 7th ballast tank was added to compensate for the missile section.
It was under the machinery space, aft of the missile section.

The outside of the hull was fared in to the larger section and the missile deck covered almost all of the change.

      Thanks! That explains a lot.

        Mark,

First off, you are probably just about 25-30 minutes down the road from me if you stated location is correct. I will send you an email here shortly after I post this to connect offline.

Second, you may be interested in this thread that I have started here. Long story short, is that the missile section of the boat was designed and is relatively common in all the 41 for Freedom boats. Even the sails are relatively common. The link that I shared has some of my "detailed" analysis as well as some pretty good references. This is a project that I am also wanting to pursue as a conversion to the 1/72nd Skipjack. This is something, though that I am not in a real hurry to complete, but I have enough information to start detailing out a model.

          Adam,

...been meaning to suggest/ask....would you consider taking your analysis and write it up for an article for the SCR?

                1/72 scale.
                Skipjack 252' = 42.00"
                GW = 382' = 63.67" (I know the books say 381' 7")
21.67" is the needed length to add to go from Skipjack to Washington.

Diameter goes from Skipjack 5.17" to Washington 5.50".
