Goff NAUTILUS in the eyes of a Mechanical Engineer

....and now for something completely different.

So I'm not an engineer, what is going on here? Are you looking at the displacement or testing the hydrodynamic efficiency of this shape? I'm just guessing here as I don't know what CFD is but I'd love to know.

I have no idea. I would guess to see what the flow boundry profile looks like and maybe to see what the drag bucket is, which would be attrocious, I would think.

A few years ago I developed a number of thrust/speed curves. I used both a 7 foot and 4 foot Disney Nautilus.

I don’t have the data anymore but the curve was very exponential. At speeds above 4 mph (real speed) an increasing amount of thrust is required.

The sub is not very “hydrodynamic”. In fact if anything, a piano would probably have better flow characteristics. Nonetheless 4 mph on a model submarine such as the Disney Nautilus is still impressive.
