I believe the grate shapes represent nothing in real life on the 1:1 scale ship. I know they're not press ejector pin marks, as those are the round indentations. I have seen these in other injection molded pieces and I think they have something to do with stress relief or are anti-warp necessities. Or, there is collusion amongst the manufacturer and filler suppliers to get modelers to use more filler!

Could it be that this is not supposed to be a water tight door?

It would help if you told us from what kit is this part.

...bulkhead to one of the machine/motor rooms?

So far I cannot find a(ny) photo that has anything like those shapes in those locations....

This is not my project and I have absolutely no knowledge of German U-boats. I am just trying to help someone out on another forum by tapping the knowledge here on the SubCommittee. It appears to me to be maybe a bulkhead to crew quarters.

You can see more on the Finescale Modeler Ship Forum http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling.../t/175079.aspx

I must say that this looks to be a fantastic model! I only wish that it was a U.S. Gato/Balao class and I would have bought one.
