    Hi,
The first model sub should be one that is fairly affordable, fairly easy to build, easy to transport and have a high probability of working like you want it to work. The whole model submarine hobby is lots more complex than you might at first suspect. Guys who want to make their first sub fire torpedos or missiles or do other advanced sorts of things are asking for a bucket of frustration.
I would sure look at SubTechs Albacore or Marlin, or Thor Designs Permit. They are designed for low cost, ease of construction, and reliable operation. You can transport them in the back seat of a car and have big fun without having to take a second out on your house. They look great too.

I would say that if you want to learn about r/c subs while you are building one, the Albacore/Marlin from Subtech and the U47 from robbe would be very good.
If you just want to stick a working drive in an almost finished hull, then Thor Design hull with a D&E WTC will be perfect and ready to run in days.

Also have a look at Norbert Bruggens Delphin model. Simple, small and inexpensive.

I'll second that statement regarding purchasing a simple model for you first.

My Nautilus took over two and a half years to build, over five hundred hours of labor, and mucho $.

There's nothing more frustrating than having a half completed model and watching from the sidelines while everyone else runs their boats at the pond.

Get a good starter kit, get it built and running right, and then use the knowledge that you gained to build your next one.

Hey, My first sub was a small world model,USS Blueback!! was very complete, and easy to build. Also dave manley is very helpful if you have any question's.It comes with WTC (water tight comparment) motor, speed control. The only thing that is even close to being difficult, is triming out the boat and that's not too hard, you can do it in a bathtub.I ran my boat at the S.F regatta and people loved it!

                  Hi,
I have never built the Dumas kit, but several SubCommittee members have, and it can be built into a very handsome boat. SubTech offers an upgraded version, that would probably save you quite a bit of worry regarding leaks, power trains and such. The Dumas boat could be a very smart way to go for the first time out, but the SubTech upgrades would sure be worth the small extra money that they cost.
