Question about the Israeli GAL class submarine.

In about 90% of photos of the Israeli GAL class submarine, when it is out to sea, there are vertical posts/MASTS that stick up out of the bow sonar dome. Sometimes they are quite low, sometimes they stick way up high out of the dome.

WHAT ARE THOSE POSTS/MASTS, AND WHAT ARE THEY FOR?

Thank You in advance for any info you can provide---------------rugerp95dc man.

Well the mast on the bow is a retractible flag pole. The Kilos have them too as do a lot of other subs.

Are you sure my friend, four or five of these posts close together, they don't look like a flag pole. Check out page 1, picture number six. Those posts/masts which are low in this picture, but on some they stick up about twice that high.
I was just wondering what they are.

Another photo of the posts/masts I questioned on top of the bow sonar dome.

Lastly, picture two and four, and the GAL-LERY link.

I doubt those are masts because they look an awful lot like bollards. That's how they moor the boat to the dock. Here's a pic of a Los Angeles class docked. (http://breakingdefense.com/2012/05/f...outh-dry-dock/)

Covert Shores or Tom might know for sure.

As he says, they are retractable bollards. Even the Type VII and IX had them retractable.

Thanks all, it just seems strange that they would keep them up at sea. But, thanks for your insight.

Sure enough, your right, they are bollards, I don't know why I didn't notice it before, but in the last picture of the GAL-LERY they are used as bollards.

Opps, New photo, new evidence which still makes me think these vertical posts are some type of sensors or instruments, and not bollards. After looking at a whole lot of pictures and reviewing multiple videos of both the Israeli GAL, and German TYPE206a submarines. I still am in question as to what those vertical retractable posts are.
PLEASE REVIEW THIS NEW PHOTO THAT I FOUND from an Israeli "GAL" class of submarine(now my favorite submarine of all time.*
In this photo, the bollards are visible to be sure. But those additional posts are up both while running on the surface, and while diving, and surfacing in multiple videos and photographs. It seems if they were just bollards, they would retract them while diving, and surfacing.
It looks like the same thing on the type209/1200 that several South American countries have now.
Mr. HI Sutton, I was hoping you might know what the answer is.Click image for larger version
