    Building the Thor Alfa

Well I got my kit last night, and she is a beautiful boat. Matt et al. did a great job making this kit.

However, I am a novice, and the instructions are kinda lacking, anyone have pics or write up of their assembly of this kit? I was looking through the plans and pics, but I am not sure which holes are to be cut out for the drain holes, when and where the holes are drilled for the rudders and dive plains (I am assuming you just put them in the scribed areas and mark the holes of from planes and rudders and drill there.

back when I built my kit (wow...that's like 9 years ago now...)

Matt had the areas where the planes and rudders scribed so placement of the openings for the rudders and planes was as easy as laying the appendage against the hull and marking the holes through the openings in the base of the appendage. This boat was the easiest submarine build I have ever done. No worries about attaching the sail, and since at that time all four rudders and planes were the same, it was a simple matter of attaching them, and fairing in the bases of the appendages.

It was also the best running sub I ever owned. On the surface, it makes a wide circle, but underwater, it was amazing in its response.

You will enjoy building and running this boat.

      Hi Novagator,

I'm building a 1/96 Thor Permit and there are excellent on-line instructions on Thordesign's site for this kit.
The beauty of these instructions is that they're good also for the other kits of the Thordesign's line, so check out on Matt's website, and I'm sure you'll find some answers to your questions!

Yeah, I have been studying those, and trying to compare with the instructions supplied. I guess once I start actual construction, things will become more clear.

          John,

I freely admit one of the weak points of that kit is the instructions, but we are working very hard to improve them. Especially since the kit has been completely updated the DeepSea Designs plans reallly do not reflect the boat you have. That is the main reason Dave Merriman, Paul Crozier, Lyle Jansma, and myself are working hard to provide DVD instructions and online instructions for each and every kit. The Permit is first, then Alfa, then Seawolf. The new instructions will have live video that will take you from opening the box to submerged operations. In the mean time, any questions you have will be promptly answered if you care to drop me an email or call me on the product line. The online Permit instructions are 95% applicable to the Alfa. Have fun!

For what it’s worth look at my web page (on here), it may not be correct but it’s what I did.. I don’t know about your kit but mine was not marked as to where to cut the top hull for the stern plane area. You might want to ask Matt about this, I ended up cutting a little too far forward and now access to the control horn area for the stern planes it harder than what it needs to be. Good luck

              Don,

Did you drill out the round holes because it called for it like the real Alfa, or did you just do it, because you wanted to?

                          John,

Since it is a round hull, it is most accurate to measure the angle from the horizontal centerline. Measure with a protractor 45 degrees down from centerline and add 3 degrees to it. It is almost 3 inches using a flexible measuring tape.

well, I tried to send you an e-mail but I have had no luck...the delivery system message says me that there has been an error in the aardvark network and therefore my message has never arrived.
I'm a bit puzzled, I can send e-mails to every address (I recently wrote to Wayne Frey and he kindly sent me some great pics of the SubRon5 2003 meeting) but yours. Perhaps you have some kind of protection that blocks my messages?

                              That could very well be.

                              Mauro,

That could very well be. The aardvark has a very strong spam filtering system. No yahoo or hotmail addresses can get through anymore, either. It may be detecting your email, in error, that your message is spam. Try sending me a message through the messaging system here on this website. I usually get a dozen or so of those a day and they all seem to work very well.
