Dave Merriman III torpedo launcher

Hi all,

I was reviewing some days ago the excellent article written by David Merriman III about his amazing 1/96 and 1/72 torpedo and launchers.
I'm only a beginner in this hobby and these things are pretty much like magic for me, but sincerely I didn't understand how the launcher works, what is the "impulse bottle" for and the other things that are into that complex system.
Is there anyone willing to teach me how these things function? I'd really appreciate it!!!
