    Estes Missiles

    Hi.
I was wondering the people who used Estes rockets, did they have a missile tube in their subs?
Im thinking of doing a missile myself with a estes rocket and a tube made out of aluminium which stretches through the whole sub.

    Are you going to have

Are you going to have a launch rod in there? Are you going to make a non scale set of fins to stabilize it? How are you going to keep the black powder and igniter dry?

Remember model rockets rely on both a launch rod and fins for stability and safety. I built the Saturn V rocket many years ago...it needed a set of fins over the "display" fins to be stable enough to leave the pad. They don't have internal guidance systems like a missile.

Be careful if you venture down that path...

      Hi Sam
well actually mine will have sort of a guidance system a GPS system to be exact.
And yes it will have stabilizing fins, they will deploy as soon as the engine dies, so instead of a parachute popping out, out goes stabilizing fins.
We are experimenting in a pool to check how to make a dry compartment for the rocket also if we can get a steady launch from underwater.
So far it looks like we are going to use the Viking rocket.

        Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!

        I hear

        Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!

I hear bad things about mixing fire and water (or more properly... extremely high temperature explosive chemicals and one very expensive submarine model).

Can't remember where, but someone had a rocket catch during liftoff and set his sub on fire. It would probably make a mess of your paint finish during liftoff, too.

Personally, I'd go with a Propel missile. It's FAR safer, and still gives that WHOOSH! and smoke effect when it launches.

Also, don't try it around the public. All you need is a lawsuit from a mother of some kid who got a missile in the forehead. A mother who also happens to have her law degree and some time to kill...

          Hi Bob
Nice to hear from you except when I complain on your mail hehe
          Well...
          1. I live in Sweden not US, people don't make a living out of getting other people to court here.
          2. I can't use the propel gas as engine because it takes up far to much space in order for me to put all the guidance equipment into the rocket, also it won't rise to the same heights. Propel gas 40-50feet---- Viking missile 400m (1200feet) there is kind of a difference
But yes we will have to figure out someway to protect the sub from the fire, so far we are experimenting with putting the rocket inside a tub made out of aluminium which goes right throu the whole sub, that way the rocket will never have anycontact with the sub.

            hi Skuggan,
            Hey, I think

            hi Skuggan,
Hey, I think you have the same ideas alot of these other guys have had at one time. E-mail Mike Dory sometime and ask him about shooting rockets out of subs! Yes they do work underwater, just like bottle rockets. One problem is when they break the surface no telling what direction they will go. Maybe right at you or a by stander..... Another joy you should experience out in the country somewhere.... Jeff Jones

Well I wont be using these missiles anywhere near people, the pond is about 1km from where you can even park, the good thing is that the pond is completly dead so there is a very good visibility in it.
