Torpedos - Anyone have knowledge about the launcher
Torpedos - Anyone have knowledge about the launcher
Hi
is there anyone who has knowledge about the torpedo launchers? Like a building description stuff like that or know where I could buy the information?
Hi Scott,
Thanks but Ive already looked at these pages and they don't really explain a lot of the difficult parts.
yeah Im working on missiles already but its still kind of secret =)
They are going to be homing missiles controlled by GPS, or that is the goal anyway
Skuggan,
I just catch the missiles as they come down, or I send a kid into the water to retrieve them. KISS principle. See last picture on my SubCommittee members homepage, My homepage
Art broder, yes that is pretty handy indeed.
But I find a missil that only fires up in the sky and drops dead in the water not to thrilling.
Thats why Im doing the whole GPS system thing for my missil, but that is not the current question nor the problem at hand, I need help on how to build the launcher for torpedos.
Doesn't anyone know?
Doesn't anyone play against the naval ships?shooting torpedos thru their hulls must be a really good sight?
Hehe thank you guys, but its still not the missiles Im looking for help about, its the torpedo launchers.
Im not going to use a Co2 to start the missile.
hi Skuggan,
The missle system and torpedo system can be used exactly the same way! Depending on what type of torp. your going to use of course, be it compressed gas or electric. The real subs had 3 ways to launch a torpedo.
a. blow them out of the tube with compressed air...
well as it looks right now I will mostly fire Solid 1/4"(6mm) aluminium rods with rounded ends.
But I have heard that they do not travel more then about 2m which is not enough.
As I said I want to use the torpedos against the ships with their balsa wood hulls, so the torpedos will have to break through, prefferable right through their hull.
Also I would like to use some armed torpedos for shows and stuff.
I dont know which torpedo I should use, but I have heard that if I make the torpedo hollow it will not go through the hull it will only get stuck and plug its own hole.
hi Skuggan,

a. blow them out of the tube with compressed air... this would cause bubble to surface, giving away the subs position... b. flush them out of the tube with water using compressed air or.. c. let the torp run out of the tube under its own power.
seems most of us using a gas torpedo pull a pin out the back with a servo to release the gas allowing the torpedo to take off and start its run... Bill Huxhold built electric torpedos and used compressed air to push the fish out the tube past a magnet starting the motor...very cool, very complex...... good luck, hope i didn't type your ear off..... Jeff Jones
one more thing,,, if you decide to make an expolding torpedo,,,"DON'T" take it to a show, use it out in the country somewhere by yourself............. Jeff Jones
Jeff
Do you know how to build any of the three ways you described? I guess that c is out of the question but a,b are very interresting, how will b work with compressed air?will there be no bubbles to trace the sub?
sounds really cool I must say, where lies the difference? in the torpedo or in the launcher??
hi Skuggan,
The best thing to do or the easiest way is to start .... Go to Tim Smally's web site, look for his name on the message boards, there is a link to his site by any of his posts. Once there, look for making your own torpedos by Mike Dory, you will get a basic idea of whats involved. The system is basically simple, you will have to construct the parts yourself. But the idea is this, you will have a gas filled torpedo, using a pin attached to a servo you will pull the pin to release the gas and let to torp. run..... good luck. Remember saftey first when using any type of comperssed gas ... Jeff Jones....
