Attention, Attention. All hands stand by for important announcement.

SubCom MI will be participating in 2015 Bay Area Makers Faire that will be held on the 16th and 17th of May at the San Meteo County Faire Ground.
Mark Jones and I will be participating again this year, we had John Kinkele and his son Matthew at the faire with us last years faire. John and Matt were a big help when they gave their time to help us help our friends in the Western Warship Combat Club set up the battle pond. They like Mark and I came in on Friday the day before to help work in setting up the event for that weekend and stayed through Saturday. Paul Felsch and his Dad Alfred came on Sunday. Thanks Guy's I hope we can count on you to help again at this years event?
But we need more volunteers. We will again help WWCC set up and tear down the battle pond and as we did last year, we will show off our boats, answer questions and give demonstrations to those who want to try their hands at the controls of our subs. We will talk about the SubCommittee and steared people in the right direction to becoming life long model submariner's.

I will have seven exhibitors badges like last year. So if you are interested volunteering please give me a shout! We all had a blast last year and your participation in this years event we will make it better than last.

2015 Makers Faire Up date.

Gentlemen,

The Battle Pond is confirmed for the 2015 Bay Area Maker Faire. Last year, we introduced submarines in our rotation of hands-on demonstrations that occur between battles. This year, we'd like to see more submarines, and especially underwater drones shooting video. This is an opportunity to do recruiting for your clubs, to get media exposure, and to have fun with other submariners! It's also an opportunity to see and experience some of the most innovative and creative uses of technology in the world, all gathered in one place.

Thursday, May 14th: We will be erecting and filling the 44' x 72' pond on Thursday, May 15th this year, and putting the finishing touches on our respective exhibit spaces and displays on Friday morning. We need all-hands for this installation, starting at 8:30am at the San Mateo Event Center in San Mateo, California.

Friday, May 15th: From 8:30am until 1:00pm, we will be doing final setup finishing touches. At 1:00pm, the fun begins, and we will be running subs and surface ships on the pond as the gates open to allow media and invited Industry and Education groups to tour the various exhibits until 7:00pm. This will be a golden opportunity to spotlight your hobby, and your creations. We will be offering hands-on opportunities to selected members of these groups, so be thinking about how you might want to work with us on this activity.

Saturday, May 16th: 10am – 8pm: Combat events, interspersed with hands-on submarine and surface runs.

Sunday, May 17th: 10am –4pm: Combat events, interspersed with hands-on submarine and surface runs, followed by all-hands for strike/take-down.

The Deal:

If this sounds interesting, free tickets and tee-shirts, plus a limited number of first-come/first-served free parking passes will be provided, in exchange for a commitment to help us install on Thursday, or take down on Sunday. The days in between are intended to give you plenty of opportunities to have fun, share your boats, and enjoy the Faire.

Good news everyone! Our application for the SubCommittee to attend as a returning exhibitor for the 2015 Makers Faire in San Mateo has been excepted .
Now all we need is volunteers who would like join in to help manned the booth to answer questions and run boats in the battle pond in between the battles.

To all MI members, please get back with me if you are interested in volunteering at the faire? I will have a limited number of exhibitors passes.

I am still in need of MI SubCom volunteers for the Makers Faire in San Meteo in May. I need those who can and are willing to help with the pond set up on Thursday and help manned the booth from Saturday to Sunday. If you can only do one day on the weekend that will still be good. Please let me know what day you prefer. The more people we can have covering the booth more opportunities we will all have to take time too enjoy what the faire has to offer.

Please get back with me asap, so I will know where we are on this. The level of support out from our group will be an important factor in determining whether or not we will be participate in next years event.

Hello All.

Here is the update for SubCom MI participation in 2015 Sam Mateo Makers Faire from May 14th, thru 17th.

It went very well, I had a couple of bad starts on opening Friday but Saturday and Sunday was good. I wish I could have taken more time during the event to walk around and see what was at the faire. But that is pretty much the way it goes when you have a exhibit booth to run. Mark Jones was with me on Thursday and Friday for the set up and help the Western Warship Combat Club set up the battle pond which we use to run the boats. Phil Weber took time off and was there on Friday. John Kinkele came down from Petaluma in the North bay on both Friday and Saturday his son Matthew came with a friend.

Rod Broyles came in on Saturday as well. Rod has taken some 136 pictures at the faire to use in my report for the MI web page. Giovanni Hurt was the only one who unable to attended the show, he later sent me a text saying that there was an illness in the family and apologies that he could not make it. Maybe he can next year?


We also had a visit from our old friend from Volcania.


The San Francisco Model Yacht Club came and set up a booth with the cabin cruiser, tug boats and fishing trawlers plus they brought small Victoria sailing boats for the kids to try out.


Don Ciucci brought his 9ft long 32nd Parallel Balao class fleet boat the USS Billfish to the show on Saturday and drove it in the battle pond for a few minutes. He gave me and John Kinkele the run down and showed off the internal workings of the boat. Don did not build the boat him self but it was offered to him by the man who did build it and gave it to Don before he passed away. I asked Don if he would considered bring the Billfish to our Fun Run this year in Sept, said he could do that. Don normally runs the Billfish at Speckles Lake in Golden Gate Park.


As I have mentioned I had a bad start with my boats on Friday. Nothing was seems to be working right, I was under the impression that some of my servos were going out or other issues, etc., A Tamiya power plug had broken loose from ESC on the Blueback, I had no parts too fix it but luck will have it the guys at the WWCC had some deans connectors available so I swapped it out and the one on the battery too, it worked fine after that. But the issue were still plaguing the rest of the boats, I slept on it and came to realized that it might be my new - used 9ch Futaba radio that was causing the problem. Thank fully I had the foresight to bring my old 4ch radios with me and everything worked well after that.

On Sunday my Lafayette did have a run in with a sail boat which broke off one of my periscopes. Ouch! But all in all it could have been much worst. Back To The Yard!

The Western Warship Combat Club had put on a good show this year. It was their eighth year running at the Makers Faire. Which the Faire was celebrating it tenth anniversary. They came in on Wednesday afternoon to start work on the battle pond because they had to be ready when the tanker truck came with the water for the pond. Yes that's right tanker truck. Why you asked? It is because of the drought, for the past eight years WWCC use the faire ground fire hydrant to fill up the pond with 24,000 gallons of water.

The City of San Mateo said they can not do that any more and have to bring in their own water. So Rob checked around and purchased reclaimed water from Redwood City and had hire a tanker company in San Jose to truck the water to the faire ground. But before he could do that Rod had to first take and pass a course on the responsible use of reclaimed water before he can use it. That's California for you. Any ways, after the show the water will be pumped out to an above ground storage tank and than the water will be trucked off to be reused on the city land scape or constructions site. Now that's what I call dedication to one's club!

WWCC held their Allied vs the Axis war game battles with a full capacity crowd in the bleachers. They had five shows on Saturday and four shows on Sunday. In each show they had 6 to 8 volunteers from the audience to captain one of the 3 or 4 cargo ships from each opposing side while the opposing forces trying to sink the others cargo ships. Blue Flag & Red Flag, the last cargo ship still floating is the winner. On the finale battle on Sunday it was an all out brawl with the warships going after each other and the cargo ships too.
