SubCom MI at 2014 Makers Faire

    Hello One and all.

Just an up date on the up coming SubCom MI participation in the Makers Faire in San Meteo California May 17th, thru 18th.

The good news is as you all know we in will have uses of the Western Warship Combat Clubs battle pond to demo the boats and give hands on control to interested faire goers in between their battles. We will share the pond with the San Francisco Model Yacht Club who will be demoing the sail boats and offering hands on control to the faire goers on sailing plus they will help WWCC in operating their cargo ship convoys in the battles.

Now for the bad news. I will not be able to be at the Makers Faire on Friday May 16th for the set up and orientation, I unfortunately will be on business travel all that week in Pennsylvania and will be flying back on that day but I will be at the faire early on Saturday morning. The other bad news is that Rod Broyles who said he will at the faire informed me that he will also be in Pennsylvania too for a wedding that weekend. Bummer!

I will have five exhibitors badges available for us. Mark Jones and my self, Paul Felsch and maybe his dad and Giovanni Hurt(though he has not yet confirmed or on what day, said he plans to be at the faire. I hope he does.)will be at the faire. If Paul's dad or Giovanni are not able to participate at the faire, this will mean I will have two exhibitors badges left over. So if any of you are interested in attending please get in touch with me asap!

If you do plan on attending the faire to help out in the exhibitors booth let me know what day you will to be there? Also please let me know if you plan on bring a sub with you so we know how much space we will need make for the exhibit? Our exhibit space is 10 x 10 with two 8' x 30" tables, it will be situated near the battle pond. I will have the boat on display along with our SubCom MI banner, and a video screen to play our past SubCom sub regattas, literature and books, we will hand out SubCom pamphlets and answer any questions that people may have and sign up people who are interested in joining SubCommittee.

If you are not going to participate but are interested in coming to the faire, tickets are $32.50 dollars for adults $22.50 for student and $17.50 for youth/child. Purchase your tickets on line http://makerfaire.com/bayarea-2013/

I hope to see many of you come out to enjoy the faire and make a show of support for the SubCommittee.

Re: SubCom MI at 2014 Makers Faire

    Hey there,

Sorry for the long delay in updating this post of the Mare Island chapter of the SubCommittee participating in the May 2014 Makers Faire.
As last posted we were invited last year to participate in the Makers Faire by our friends at the Western Warship Combat Club. Those you participated in the event were non other that My self, Mark Jones from San Jose, John Kinkele & son Matthew from Petaluma and Paul Felch and his Dad from Livermore CA.
We arrived on Friday morning to help the guys in the WWCC to set up the battle pond which took the entire day to build and fill with water to be used for their battles and for us to demonstrate our subs between the battle events.

There were approximately 29,000 people who attended the battles with the bleachers filled to capacity over the two day period.
Things went very well with out incident.

We set up our booth just inside the entrance to the battle pond so the people coming will see our display as they enter the arena. We had a monitor set up playing 2007 and 2008 sub regatta video's on the back table with the sound turned up.

My self with john Kinkele and Mark Jones at our booth at the entrance to the battle pond.

We many guest who signed our guest list and asked us questions about our boats and the SubCommittee and how to get in on the hobby. We've also gave those who asked hands on the controls One was a Five year old boy named Matthew who was fascinated by the subs, his mother asked if he wanted pilot on of the WWCC freighters but he wanted to try a sub, with reservations she asked me if her son could try it? So I asked him which one he would like to pilot? He pointed to the large Engel Lafayette of mine and said that one. I put it in the water and held the radio for him and told him to put his thumbs on the toggle which. He was thrilled to be able make the boat move and dive. When we were done his mom thanked me. This is what we were here for!

We all had a great time at the event there were a great many things to do, learn and see. We were situated in the back of the faire ground lot with many fabulous works of metal sculptures and vehicles moving about the grounds, many of them have been featured at the Burning Man event in Sparks Nevada over the years. One was a drive able Nautilus built by Five Ton Crain. Now there's my dream car! The Nautilus was built around an aircraft tow vehicle with a interior cabin and upper deck armed with a water cannon.

Also there was a metal flame gushing octopus call El Pulpo Mecanico and amphibious sea dragon too, that looked as though it may have came right out of Nemo's worst nightmares from steam punk hell. This place is on crack for inventors!

Plus there are pavilion booths with lots of cool gadgets and components and stuff for tinkerers and makers.

In all the event went very well and the Western Warship Combat Club asked us to joined them again next year in 2015. And we will be there.
We have learned so much that will make our next visit even better.

If you get the chance, I highly recommend that you pay a visit to one on your states Makers Faire.

    That is all for now.
