SCDS region question

Gents,

I was wondering if there were any out there who would like to see a large subregatta here in the S.E. US. Out of all of the states we encompass I would think that there is a similar venue here in the southern US.

Anyone have any ides or thoughts on this? Could eliminate some driving if we held a regatta here in the sunny south. Any ideas on locations that might be suitable? Anyone want to help organize the search to see if it is even a good idea?

It sounds great but finding

It sounds great but finding a place to run and getting everyone to show up will be the biggest problem. I setup fun runs every month and only a few hardcore guys show up.

Part of the challenge Jim.

Part of the challenge Jim. Certainly with all of the guys here in the south we could pull it off. There has to be a good lake or pool we can use. I recall some prospects in the s.c.area....

what requirements do we need

what requirements do we need for a large regatta?

A lake or reflecting pond would be ideal.

Clear water.

Access to waters edge.

A field to set up tents.

Restrooms nearby.

Volunteers to run the show.

Donations for some prizes.

How hard can that be?

You can answer all those

You can answer all those questions once you pull it off Charlie.

You can request assistance (i believe) from the SC to throw your event.

Personally I always thought Devils den is perfect.
Restrooms
clear water
shade
bbq pits
nice boat launch
just a bit of a pain to get to

You can also look into getting a college pool. Near the end of the swim season. One with an underwater window would make me drive back for it.

...not sure what that means, but there are a number of SC members who have been responsible for the annual SubRegattas over the past years that can and will offer advice and guidance as to how to put on a large event.

One item that is missing from your list of requirements that comes readily to mind is]http://www.subcommittee.com/forum/icon_smile.gif[/img]

Thanks Jeff that is what I meant but did not properly type it

There are lots of guys who have experience arranging such an event. I would highly recommend contacting some and hearing what they have to say.

Not a SubCommitte member, yet (heck, I'm still working on my first sub), but take a look at this thread from RCG]http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1141136

I threw out a couple of ideas of "local" (north-central Alabama) spots. Another possibility is Joe Wheeler State Park, which might be better for a BIG gathering.

Bill,

I simply walk into the water or stand on something and off it goes to the bottom. The park you have the link to looks nice but it might be an issue with real boats creating a wake and such. What if we had a erratic torpedo run and took out the local regatta admiral? Some of those boats look expensive, alsmost as expensive as our models!

Re: SCDS region question

I don't know how bad full-size boat wakes will be at the park. There are "designated swimming areas" in the park and marinas/docks have a "no-wake" rule, so it may not be an issue. I can see how waves of any sort could be rough on subs. Waves at the Smith Lake area maybe a problem with many bass-boats and Jet-Skis.

Re: SCDS region question

Go for it. You have been to regattas so you know what's required!
I've been told that if no sub ron steps up there will be no regatta in 2010. We can't expect the same couple of groups to do it every year.

If you have decent water and a place to park with a reasonable hotel closeby - put in your suggestion to the SC board!!!

TIM/ALL,

I have a question about the carmel pool/veterans facility.
Does that reflecting pool/pond have metal rebar in the bottom like a swimming pool????
One would think so but I'd like to ask just for clarification.

Thanks

It's huge, it's concrete. I would think it does.
