Can someone tell me who's the man to see about rejoining the AMS? If you'll have me back, that is...

BTW. A suggestion. The membership form would be better as a PDF file, as I'm sure more people have Acrobat reader installed than word, and even if they don't, it's readily available as a free download, unlike Word.

Sorry Rich but if you phone or email me I will post you a form. Is it possible to print it off in a Public Libray?.

Point taken, Andy. Mr Gates has got enough of our money! We will look to a pdf file. Actually this posting is being done entirely without Microsoft using Firefox and Linux (Ubuntu version. ) Ubuntu even has a nice "Wordlike" word processor.

I got it all up and running in a day as a dual boot and it is just great. Nice software and much quicker to run because of reduced virus threat.

I installed Ubuntu on an old Compaq deskpro PIII machine which I'm using for my CNC mill project. Very nice, and I'll probably switch to it on my desktop machine if/when the borg stop supporting Windows 2000.

Runs very well indeed. I downloaded it as a disc image alongside EMC2- Enhanced Machine Controller 2, which is a free program designed for controlling almost any kind of machine, but is mostly used for CNC machinery, chiefly mills.

                        Guys,

There is a free downloadable alternative to the Microsoft Office programs. It is called OpenOffice, and can be found at http://www.openoffice.org/.
It is a full suite of office programs which can handle all the standard file formats such as .doc .xls etc. You get the full functionality of Word, Excell, Power Point, and more. Output files are completely compatible with Microsoft programs. You can even take a .doc file and output it to .pdf. I have used it successfully for years. And did I mention.... its FREE! Check it out.

I agree that OpenOffice is very good and it forms part of the Ubuntu Linux distribution. It seems to be very compatible with Windows file formats and is easy to use.

The big advantage of Linux is that the web browser runs so much faster without all the antivirus software. This is fine as long as Linux is not threatened by viruses!

Sorry Rich we seem to have gone off topic- I hope you have your form!

No problem Davy...I have enough problems with Microsoft, let alone anything else!

I downloaded the form onto a floppy disc, took it to work to print off, but the powers that be wouldn't have any of that, in case I left them a virus. Bloody cheek!! I'll pop into the local internet cafe and do it from there.
