I attended this show on the Saturday. First time I've been, and a very nice show with something there for everyone.

This was it's 30th year, and there were plenty of people coming through the doors to look at the exhibits.

The AMS were present and put on a nice display of models, a few photos of which are down below.

Hmm, well the main snag is none of the boats pictured belong to Sub Committee members, they're all owned by AMS members.

Andy, do you have anymore pitures/info on the WTC with the Engel tanks? What sub is that built into? I cant see what type of sealing and retaining system he employed. I am building something similar for the Akula but with a single tank. Looks like thats a double tank with operational scopes in the centre.

I don't doubt that, Jeff. I was just thinking along the lines of it being difficult to get someone to write for a publication of a group they don't belong to.

I can ask of course, when I see them next. I can help ghost write an article, but I think it's preferable to let people discus their own models.

The scratchbuilt WTC/dive module is owned by Alf Blake, and is fittted into a GRP 206 hull. The hull is produced by Nigel Edmonds (AMS chairman, and a very good sub builder). It uses twin Engel tanks (750ml, by the looks of it) and the TMAX system, the periscopes are motorized in a way similar to your Typhoon- i.e. they go up and down together, the main drive batteries sit underneath this mechanism in a sealed box.

The sealing system is o-rings, radially compressed, and the endcaps are prevented from popping off courtesy of external threaded rods, and retaining brackets. Very similar to how Sheerline seal their modules, but they use axial compression and flat rubber seals instead of o-rings.

I didn't take any more pictures of that model I'm afraid, but there is nothing paticularly elaborate about his design. It's still a work in progress at the moment.

Hi All,

Speaking as a member of both the SubCommittee and the AMS.(of which I'm also Treasurer) - I don't think there would be a problem publishing an article. It would have to be published first in the AMS mag but that's no problem.

I am really pleased that the sub is Alf's work. He is a brilliant modeller and a great raconteur.

One of his much earlier subs was one using compressors and glow plug main engines! To add to the realism (Just like the early petrol driven subs) he had his share of explosions!
