      As someone who also has

As someone who also has to work weekends, I can appreciate the need to know the date in advance. There is a bit of a snag this year at the present.

      1. My attempts at trying to secure the pool at Trent Park have been frustrated, as I cannot get in contact with the person in charge. However I haven't ruled this out yet, and remain hopeful.

      2. The pond at Colney Heath is at present a primordial pea soup. We were very lucky last year, as it remained clear, just a few weeks later, it went as green as grass and completely opaque. I thought the winter months would clear it out, but it's still the same.

To sort this out the pool needs completely dredging and a form of filtering needs to be introduced.

The club has over 40 marine members, but it's being left to a couple of us to come up with the remedy, despite a call for help. Same old story................

What I don't want, is to announce a date then wind up with a pond that's unsuitable for running subs in.

However, I did set the date at 1st July 07.

          Andy, if all else fails

Andy, if all else fails then we could do worse than go over to black park, £2 parking all day and a large expanse of clear water!

          Paul.

            Well I'd be a bit

Well I'd be a bit concerned over treading on the toes of Black Park Model boat Club.

I believe they organise regattas throughout the year, although I'm not sure if they're open to everyone (anyone else like to chime in), and they are a mix of targets and subs.

I'm making some progress with enquiries over Trent Park, when (if) I get it in the bag, I'll let you all know.

How do you guys feel about a small fee for admittence, say about £5?

Here is a couple of shots of the pool at Trent Park from Google Earth, far away and close-up. The pool isn't massive 90x 30ft, so would suit small to medium size craft.

Yeah, I'd say up to a tenner for admittance - and would be happy to pay.

                  Okay.

                  I finally managed to contact

                  Okay.

I finally managed to contact Mel Parker, and I have some rates for the pool hire.

Hourly cost is £45 per hour plus lifeguards, plus VAT. However he said that as I would be interested in hiring the pool for the day, this could be reduced to £40 per hour inclusive of a lifeguard(not sure if this includes VAT or not- I hope it does!).

My idea was to hire the pool from 10-00 AM until 4-00 PM. My experience from last year is that these are the key times- and it gives upto six hours sailing, surely enough for even the keenest of model submariners.

Now down to the nitty gritty. To break even I will need a definite number of 25 substers waving a tenner each.

I think the admission should be reduced for juniors and possibly pensioners, but this may make the event run at a loss.

There is the option of a raffle, but this depends on people donating prizes, so it may be simpler at this stage to just ask folk to pony up.

Also refreshments could be laid on with a small mark-up and the profits could go towards offsetting any potential loss.

I didn't make a head count of last years sub run, but I estimate we had about 15 people turn up at various times of the day.

With the promise of a pool, perhaps we can attract a few more people along.

I'm going to put out a few feelers and see what support I can drum up.

Oh and BTW, the event would be likely to run on 20th May which is a Sunday.

Andy, are those quotes better than the ones they gave you last year?
If we are likely to be less than 25 attendees, what about shortening the time slot, say midday until four?

                    Paul.

                      Better quote than last year.

Better quote than last year. I think I got to talk to someone lower down the food chain last year. Although to be fair, I did ask for a quote for a days pool hire, so they may have quoted me for 12 hours or more.

A smaller time slot is a possibility. The indoor flying boys seem happy to cough up £7-8 for two to three hours use of a badminton hall at Potters Bar, so I guess £10 for four hours pool time isn't so bad.
