Where Do You All Sail?

I guess we're all pretty much spread throughout the UK guys so I would like to know - Where do you all sail your subs? I mean location, map, pics of the pool, anything to show who's where and with who (and when would be a good thing too!)
Partly out of curiosity, and partly in case some of you are not too far away for other members to 'crash in' on you some sail day.

I mostly sail at the

I mostly sail at the NLSME (North London Society of Model Engineers) club pond at Colney Heath.

This is located in Hertfordshire on a stretch of land donated to us by the waterboard for the nominal £1 a year.

The pond isn't massive- the size was dictated by the largest pond liner we could purchase. However it's big enough to have fun in.

About 2 foot at it's deepest, you can dive most boats, although long narrow vessels are a pain to turn around in the pond.

The same site also features 3 1/2", 5" and 7 1/2" gauge railway track, a lovely o gauge garden railway, and we have an old train carriage which has been converted into a cafe complete with mock station (Tyttenhangar) where you can sit an enjoy a cup of tea and a chunk of cake.

The marine contingent has a reasonably healthy sprinkling of submariners, with at least 8 or more members taking an active interest in sub-aqautic modelling.

I sometimes sail a target or two at Broomfield Park boating pond, which is based in Palmers Green, North London.

This is a stones throw from where I live, but at about 15" deep, it's a bit too shallow for operating anything but the very small boats.

As a kid I used to sometimes sail at Highgate Ponds, but I don't think model boats are allowed on the water now (snooty residents compaining about i.c boats, so they banned the lot- spoilsports).

I also used to sail at Friary Park, before they filled the pod in (council scared silly about litigation).

Both sites were based in North London again.

St Albans boating pond in Hertfordshire was another haunt, but these days the Council seem more interested in encouraging swans and geese onto the pond than model boats, so it's almost constantly weeded up!

I used to sail at

I used to sail at Child Beale, Near Reading with the Mid Thames Model Boat CLub.

I am a member of the Furness Model Boat Club at Barrow but there is currently no water in the otherwise good pond.

I am also a member of Bury Metro Marine Modelling Society and sail at their (excellent) pond at Clarence Park, Bury Near Manchester

I am a member of Bournville Model Yacht and Power Boat club.
We share the pool, generally the Yachts race on Sunday mornings and powered craft sail in the afternoons. The park is open to the public and non members often come to sail 'Toysrus' type boats and pond yachts with thier kids.

The pool is great for subs. It is a huge flat bottomed purpose built model boating lake about 3 feet deep. Paved with access all around. We have some chest waders in the clubhouse in case the worse happens. (Needed these when Nautilus went Awol !!). The water isn't very clear normally - but thats a good thing, as when we had it all cleaned out (like crystal clear) we had terrible weed problems for the following 2 years. Since it has turned murky the weed can't seem to grow, so I think we will be keeping it this way. Visability is about 12", good enough to see your sub glide by, submerged.

The clubhouse is going to be done up this year. At the moment there are facilities to make refreshments as long as someone remembers to bring the milk!

There are a few of us interested in model subs.
Rob had his modified Darnell U-boat out recently.
Eric is waiting for some parts to get his type XXI running again and he also has a Resolution which needs a new pressure hull lid.
Joe has a Dumas Bluefish.
I expect to sail my U-boat next sailing season when it is finished (and after the cold and ice have gone.)

I wouldn't mind organising a sub day sometime next year. Be nice to invite you guys with your model subs. Distance is a bit of a bind for all of us. But when I get my U-boat running I wouldn't mind travelling to see others at thier sailing spots and bring my U-boat with me.

Yes it was all built

Yes it was all built by the Cadburys, one of thier provisions for its workforce to enjoy outdoor pursuits. They used unemployed men to do the labour. Originally the pool was built for large model yachts (no radio in those days), hece the depth which was needed because of the long keels. Lots of these old boats are still kept in the clubhouse but never get to see the water. It's all radio sailing now.

@Michael, I dont think so. Folks will be having a rest from the busy weekend show last week. Plus I am at the IPMS nationals model show up at Telford over this weekend. November has been Very busy! and next weekend is the Memorabillia show at the NEC.

@Andy, well if you are talking about joining Cadburys I know that thier policy is that staff can eat as much choccie as they wish as it passes them by. Seriously! (My neighbour had a job there - after a while, she said, the appeal wears off).
If you are talking about joining the boat club ..I think I can stretch to a bar of wholenut for you myself.
