Next SubRonLA Run Set for June 11th

Had a unique SubRonLA run yesterday (4/30)—plenty of enthusiastic participants...except the water! There turned out to be so much surface and subsurface marine growth at our usual spot that surface running was difficult and submerged running impossible—so we all simply stayed outta the water! One exception was a bold skimmer who didn't take too long to foul his prop as expected. Nevertheless, SubRonLA members hung around, jawed a lot, got all caught up with each other, and of course made future plans—which, if things go well, may include a unique opportunity for a very special run in San Diego this summer or fall. Stay tuned for a forthcoming announcement (should plans indeed fall into place).

Meanwhile, our next full squadron run at Yorba Regional Park—where we will hope for more cooperative water—is now scheduled for June 11th. Hope to see you there!

SubRonLA’s first real meet of the summer on June 11 was a total bust for me (read on) while still working out okay for everyone else, thankfully. Our numbers were smaller than usual, however: just Will, Ralph (boatless this time), Erik, Danny and myself. Will’s Engel 212-class U-boat got in some relaxed patrol time, and Erik ran his Thunder Tiger-knockoff boat; otherwise it was mostly a day of skimmers: Danny’s new military speed demon (recently acquired from Will) and Will’s own giant, multi-functional tug—soon to join Erik’s fleet. (Will’s been in a sell-off mood lately!)

My Seaview? After a brief out-of-trim first run, her second patrol quickly brought an unexplained catastrophic casualty (surprising, given her recent refit): a fast trip to the bottom and an unshakeable decision to stay there—well beyond wader and/or pool skimmer rescue range, unfortunately. Just I as was prepping to make The Swim, Erik showed up with his son Alex, who graciously volunteered to do the deed, swim trunks handily already in their car. “My Hero!”

Once safely recovered, it was clear Seaview’s dry spaces had been compromised: water was everywhere, certainly accounting for the bubbles spotted above where she went down. After she’s fully dried out she’ll reveal her secrets concerning how many electronics have been ruined vs. which, if any, have survived their immersion. A whole new WTC may indeed be in order for her now. Meanwhile, at least she’ll still continue to look sleek and sexy up on the shelf. Can’t mess that up! (Note: I had decided to wear my old “Voyage to the Bottom of the Pond” SubRon5 t-shirt to our run yesterday, hoping for good luck from it. It turned out to be oddly prescient—I won’t be doing that again!)

SubRonLA’s next two summer runs have now been scheduled for July 30 and August 27. Join us?

    Jeff

P.S. Here's Alex Viirre, post-swim and Seaview recovery, seen with his W.I.P. Flying Sub. A big relief—thanks again, Alex!

Bummer Jeffty! At least the recovery was a success. Voyage to the Bottom of the Pond indeed.
