    January 2020 Indoor Y Run

Last night we had our first Indoor Sub Y Run of 2020. I had the Boone, Patti had the FS1,
Chris Rueby was performing Sea Trials on his new HYDRA Submarine, D3 had his Target,
Larry had his Akula, George had his FS1, Greg and Donnie brought a sub also.
A good time had by all.
Here are some pics. Note the pic of Greg’s Cylon Raider was from the December run.

Thanks for the pics! The Hydra sub (based on the one in the Captain America First Avenger movie) performed quite well for its first time out. It has two 380 motors and 3-blade props, one in each nacelle on the side, sealed in metal cans. They are controlled with one of Kevin McLeod's nifty Throttle Jockey units to mix the rudder and throttle channels to the two speed controls. That works quite well, lets it turn in place as well as steer while under way. I started out with no physical rudder tabs, hoping that the motor controls would be enough, but once it gets up to higher speeds the huge tail fins make it weathervane, so the steering ability goes away as it speeds up. There is enough room in the WTC for another servo, so I'll cut in some rudder tabs and hook up a second servo (first is on the bow planes) for next months run.
Greg Wagner and I have been collaborating on this design for quite a while, using movie stills and production drawings to get the proportions correct. I built up the hull with molded fiberglass ends and a plywood-on-frames center section, with turned plastic nacelles - wound up making a batch of two, so hopefully Greg will have his in the water too so we can have an attack fleet!

Don, thank you for posting those photos. The LEDs in the Cylon Raider is a really nice touch.
Chris, very nice hydra sub! looks ominous.
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.
