The Annual SubComLI Trim Party is back for 2018!

A long lost tradition of SubComLI is back!

    Trim Party \ trim \\ ˈpär-tē \ noun
    1. A prank often perpetrated on a newly-qualified Dive Officer or Chief of the Watch, where a large group of men move fore and aft to affect the trim of the boat. Starting forward, the boat takes on down bubble as it’s affected by the weight of the group. They are then alerted by a watch by the Trim pump that it has energized due to the DO pumping water aft to compensate. This band of merry men move aft quickly, where the weight has now doubled. The DO now moves water forward, and so do the wayward shipmates!. Soon the boat oscillates up and down in a frantic cycle usually until a Chief loses his coffee and ends the shenanigans. Good Times!
    2. A group of RC Submarine model nerds gathering at one of their local enthusiast’s homes to “trim” their little prides-o-joy for the upcoming “Sailing Season”. In the northeast United States it’s usually held in May when the Admiral releases the poor wanna-be’s from Spring House/Yard Refit Duties. Also Good Times with much joy!!

This year it will be held on Friday, May 25th at “Sub” Ed’s getting us ready for the Groton Fun Run.

0900: Muster at the William Floyd Diner in Shirley NY

1030: Meet back at MRCSB for the “Trim Party”. A secure, non-judgmental site where even Nub's or Millennial's can feel safe*.

Triple “T” (Tordahl Trim Tank) can accommodate boats up to 106” LOA and 14” Beam.

    BYOB, Cigars are provided.

PM me if you’re even remotely interested.

    Rain date….there ain’t none.

I have watched this evolution of 4 or 5 big men running fore and aft from the torpedo room to the machinery space aft.
The happened on the middle level because the middle level ran from the torpedo room to the front of the reactor room.

Now I wonder how this will happen on the newer boats where the control room is now on the middle deck level?
No familiar with the newer boats so I do not know it the upper or lower level goes all the way through.

But the above story brings back some fond memories of rear pklanes operators trying to keep a level boat and the dive officer barking out orders trying to get ahead of the roller coaster effect of weight shifting.

That, along with EAB races made for fun watch as QMOW. I was usually in on it but had to keep from rolling on the floor laughing as I heard the DO, COW and OOD wonder WTF. We had the best XO who loved to participate. He was 6'+ 250+ and with 8 or 9 guys love to mess with JOOD's.
I will never forget the midwatch at the QM stand where he came bursting through the fwd passage way door, face all red and sounding like Darth Vader with his EAB Mask on as he plugged into a manifold above the chart table. The COB squeezing past with muffled yelling in his own EAB running aft. That's when I learned what an EAB race was!!
To be quite honest, even as a man who doesn't fear change, I'm not sure I'd want to serve in today's Navy. For one thing, it was an honor to have most of the crew tack my Dolphins on, even having my Crow tacked on was important to me. I understand it's a very diplomatic Navy today
        Good for them.
