    Feb funrun

Our February YMCA run has come and gone.
Good times were had by all.
There will be a video of Chris's Orca running under water.
    Cool stuff.

The pictures have a flying sub in the water! Is it one of the new builds? You guys have me thinking about making one with all the activity on the thread after the kit was re-released. Now the thread is quiet. Are the builds still progressing? Are the control challenges being worked out?

                Hi Bob
Mine has been running for years.
George is still dialing his in but it looked very good at the fun run.
I am sure he will chime in.
Not sure what Paul and Jeff are up too.
I don't think Paul is out of the scale interior part of the build. And my guess is Jeff's is still in the box.
But I have been wrong before.

                  Hi Bob,
That is indeed my partly completed build of an original issue FS-1 kit that I've had laying around for far too long. Last month and this were my first two test runs, both unfortunately cut short by a faulty seal that refuses to stay glued to the aft end cap. What I learned from these short runs is that the FS-1 wants to dive if ballested level, even with just a little forward way on. Deflecting the jet thrust upward a bit wouldn't overcome this tendency. Adding an ounce of weight so she floats somewhat nose up made a big difference though, and she ran quite level. Now I need to play with adjusting the foam so she sits level on the surface too. As BD said, still dialing her in.

Yes, working on the interior a bit but got sidetracked with work and my son's Eagle Scout court of honor last weekend. He's graduating in May so lots of things happening very quickly.

So, CI, how did you find your thruster intake effectiveness? Plenty of flow as expected?
                    Warm regards,

No problem with flow at all, Paul. Plenty of water to feed my thirsty pumps, though I couldn't keep the power maxed for long given the boat 's diving tendency. It does move along nicely with minimum stick. Should be quite graceful once I get her all trimmed out.

It is interesting to see the difference in pumps.
CI's Protchenko pumps being Pump jets V Jet pumps in mine.
He lifted the tail out of the pool and had two very substantial streams of water traveling about 1'.
Mine has two very frothy streams going 6-8'.
You can either accelerate the water fast, or flow it with more volume.
                        No point really.
I just think it's interesting. BD

CI, despite the listed underwater max speed of the FS-1 (60 knots!), she never seemed to be moving very fast in during the show. I don't plan on needing a lot of throttle.

BD, so is your frothiness due to cavitation of the impellers in the jet pumps I guess?
                          Warm regards,

I think frothiness may not be the correct term.
More the fact that the water is moving so quick through the air that it starts to break up.
Like putting your finger on the end of a garden hose.
The water looses it cohesiveness. (Now there is a big word)
Lots of throttle does you know good in the FS1 anyway.
That's why I think the Rule pumps should work great. BD
