The US Navy's submarine bases are some of the most high-security installations in the world, but one of their most important and shadowy submarine outposts is not located along the ocean, but rather in a lake in landlocked Idaho.
Although located some 375 miles from the ocean, the Navy's Acoustic Research Detachment at Bayview, Idaho, has supported every major submarine design development of the last 65 years.

A lake over 100 square miles and 1,100 feet deep? Seems a little excessive doesn't it? I was planning on something similar to Devil's Lake that's 20 feet deep and about 4 square miles.

Sounds like it's time to use the old ways.
A marker buoy on a long string, held on board with a tic tac release.
The tic tac will dissolve releasing the buoy after being in the water about 20 minutes.
Sounds like a very long string!

I was just kidding around.
I have Fail Safe in my subs.
But back a long long time ago, tic tac was the quick answer.
My first submarine has this buoy system on it.
The fun part was forgetting to remove the tic tac while on the stand on the table and having the buoy deploy.
Red faced every time!
Actually I used them (buoys) on surface boats in case tragedy struck.
No tic tac needed.
Like a bow hitting broadside during a gathering of sailboats.
