    2016 Inland Northwest SubCommittee FunRun

    Guys,

Chad Divine and I are starting the ground work to hold the first annual Inland Northwest SubCommittee Sub FunRun. The FunRun will be held in Spokane, Washington in June or July of 2016. Dates and times to be announced as this all develops. The SubRon 5 guys from Colorado have already expressed interest, as has Dan Kachur from B.C. Dan is going to try and get Duane Hillier, and Barry Appel to attend which would be absolutely fantastic! You guys back East are not the only ones who have some Canadians lurking! How about the guys from Oregon and Northern California?

I'm really looking forward to this. It is going to be a lot of fun!

There aren't to many of us in Oregon sadly. Despite that, I think the hand full of us should make a local chapter-The Cascadian Navy. Silent Runner Mike is the only other operator I know of off hand in OR. We haven't met up yet sadly, but then again my Oscar II is still a WIP.

So I was detailing my flagship and got an idea. I have a few items to donate (Like a hard to find SH-60B in 1/144 scale), and I'd be willing to donate them in exchange for berthing for the SS United States.

Good deal, I'll have her ready.

Fun sub related fact, she was designed with a bunch of survival features just in case she was ever called into service in time of war. She also cruised at around 40 mph.

Here's the bird. I have two, but one lives on the Burke.

These are the birds that live on the destroyers and act as sub hunters. I know my flight deck is busy, but I like it. The guy in red that's pulling the cart is Max, after a buddy who was in the navy and was a redshirt.

Not yet. Chad and I are investigating suitable bodies of water. I am still busy building my house, racing winter. So far, I am losing. When I get it to the point that we can move in, then we will get real serious about organizing the fun run.
                      Regards,

                      Matt

Here is the leading candidate for the NW Regatta. It is Lake Pend Oreille at Bay View, Idaho. It is very close to Spokane Washington and Cour D'Alene, Idaho. It is the home of the U.S. Navy's Submarine Test bed base. The lake is crystal clear and cold. There are many nice little coves with camping spots with great lake access areas with sandy bottoms. Most of the lake bottom is small, smooth rocks. I am contacting the Commodore of the local Sailing Club to see if we can use their swimming bay which is an absolutely fantastic spot! Here are some photos:

Here is BayView where we would hold the FunRun:

You can see the US Navy Base on the West side of the lake:

The Sailing Club. The swimming area can be seen in the back:
