    Conning Towers

The conning tower is a projection above the pressure hull that provides a station for controlling the movement of the submarine. That control is typically called 'conning the ship" and is performed by the 'conning officer'. US submarines through the S-class had some form of vertical cylindrical conning tower. Then as the needs of the submarine grew the conning tower became a horizontal cylinder familiar on the Gato/Balao/Tench classes of fleet boats. With the advent of nuclear propulsion the form of the ship control team changed and the conning of the ship moved to control room. The last US submarine to have a horizontal cylindrical conning tower separate from (but attached to) the main pressure hull was the USS Triton (SSRN-586).
