Commander of sub that collided with ship is relieved of duty

The commanding officer of a Navy nuclear-powered submarine that collided last month with an amphibious ship in the Strait of Hormuz has been relieved of duty, the Navy says.
Rear Adm. Michael J. Connor has relieved Cmdr. Ryan Brookhart of his duty as commanding officer of the submarine Hartford, according to a statement from the Navy.
Brookhart was relieved because of a loss of confidence in his ability to command, the statement said.
Brookhart was in command of the Hartford on March 20 when it collided with the amphibious transport dock New Orleans, the Navy says. Connor decided that there was enough information to make the change.
Investigations into the incident are continuing, the Navy says.
Cmdr. Chris Harkins, deputy commander of Submarine Squadron Eight, has assumed command of the Hartford, the Navy says. He previously commanded the submarine Montpelier. Brookhart has been temporarily assigned to the staff of CTF 54 in Bahrain, the news release says.
The Navy said that 15 sailors aboard the Hartford were injured but returned to duty right after the collision. The submarine’s nuclear propulsion system was not damaged.
The Hartford is homeported in Groton, Conn., and the New Orleans is homeported in San Diego, Calif., according to the Navy.
