Man injured during sub base accident

Groton- A man was injured at the Naval Submarine Base Tuesday morning when a pressurized bottle containing fire-extinguishing chemical fell from a crane.

The bottle was being lifted to the top of a building on the lower base, for use in the building’s fire suppression system, around 10:30 a.m. The bridle holding the bottle broke, sending the bottle crashing to the ground and rupturing it, said Christopher Zendan, base spokesman.

A civilian employee from the base’s Public Works Department, who was overseeing the rigging operation, was knocked over by the spinning bottle and sprayed with the chemical, Zendan said.

He was treated at the scene and then taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London to be further treated for non life-threatening injuries. Three contractors, who were part of crane crew, were examined at the scene and released.

All crane and lift operations at the base have been suspended until the cause of the bridle failure has been determined.
