Volunteers needed at USS Batfish sub
Efforts are underway to renovate and restore a World War II submarine and its memorial facility. After 35 years of resting in the soil along the shores of the Arkansas River, USS Batfish volunteers, veterans and previous members of her crew are striving to save this historical relic.
The USS Batfish fought against the Imperial Japanese navy from 1943-1945. Thousands of visitors have walked through her interior compartments and played with her exterior guns and hardware.
Beginning Oct. 18, volunteers who include former crew members and more than 40 U.S. Navy Sea Cadets will begin efforts to save the Batfish. Old decking will be replaced, the loading of two WWII era torpedoes will commence, and preparations for Phase One of proposed renovation plans for the memorial will begin.
