10-ton Resurgam replica gets a makeover
Aug 4 2008 by Richard Down, Liverpool Daily Post
A REPLICA of the world’s first mechanically-propelled submarine has found a new berth.
The full-size model of Resurgam has been taken to the Maritime and Engineering College, North West – formerly the Laird Foundation – in Birkenhead, where it will be refurbished by students. The 10-ton replica had been based at Woodside Ferry Terminal until the weekend.
Neil Scales, chief executive of Merseytravel, which owns and operates the Mersey ferries, said: “Resurgam is in need of restoration and we’re pleased to be able to offer the work as a practical exercise to the students.
“Together with our German U-boat, U-534, where the students will also help with some deck restoration work, Resurgam will form part of a tremendous tourist attraction for the Woodside Ferry Terminal.â€
The original Resurgam was built in Birkenhead in 1879. She was designed by a Manchester clergyman, the Rev George William Garrett, and foundered off Rhyl, North Wales, while being towed to Portsmouth to be shown to the Royal Navy.
Resurgam was rediscovered on the seabed in 1995.
