Plans for £6m bid to remount sub revealed

HMS Alliance is currently supported on a couple of concrete pillars over the sea, but plans are in place to spruce up the sub and install a new viewing platform so people can see the vessel from up close.

The cash would also pay for structural rep

air work and to have the submarine's shell blasted and repainted.

The plans, which are still in the early stages, will not only mean people will be able to stand just inches from HMS Alliance, but that preserving the piece of maritime history will be easier.

It is based at the Submarine Museum in Gosport and Bob Mealings, curator and deputy director, said: 'We will expand the jetty to go underneath the submarine, which will improve access and also make repair and conservation work much easier to carry out.

'But there are still many hurdles we've got to jump before we can get there, including planning permission, which we haven't applied for.

'We think it's going to coast up to £6m, but it is very important because it is the only submarine from the Second World War in the UK.

'It will be incredibly satisfying though to see something I've worked so hard on finally being achieved.'

The museum has not yet had any funding confirmed, but is working closely with the Heritage Lottery Fund on the project.

When the final designs are finished, the museum will apply to the fund for £3m and will try to get the rest of the cash through applying for grants and seeking sponsorship from businesses.

They are due to put in an outline plan to the fund over the next couple of months and as long as this is approved they will then submit more detailed plans.

As long as the fund is happy with the designs, the museum will apply for planning permission from Gosport Borough Council and they hope to have completed the entire project by 2011.

Sam Goody, spokeswoman for the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: 'I can confirm that we are in discussions with the museum.

'We've already awarded them a project planning grant of £40,000 to help them develop their conservation and access plans.

'And we are expecting them to come into further funding.'
