Workers at the Sevmash construction plant in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast, have completed the renovation of the multipurpose nuclear submarine “Pantera†(project 971). On January 15 the ship headed towards its home base.
The nuclear-powered sub has been through a dramatic repair process. In November last year, the vessel caught fire during welding operations. The fire paralysed parts of the huge Sevmash plant and could potentially have caused a major crisis on the site. According to Kommersant, the fire was triggered by careless welders. The fire spread from the wooden flooring to cables stretching into the vessel. Two fire fighters were seriously injured when distinguishing the fire.
The 110 meter long Akula submarines are state-of-the-art Russian subs. The “Panther†vessel (K-317) was built in 1986 and officially included in Navy in 1990. The sub has a crew of 73 sailors, it can carry up to 28 missiles. While on mission in 1996, it experienced problems with the reactor cooling system, a crisis which was successfully solved by the submarine crew.
