Exhibits at LIMA 2007 to include a Kilo Class Sub

More Exhibits Including A Kilo Class Sub At This Year's LIMA

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 13 (Bernama) -- There will be much more exhibits at this year's Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA 2007) exhibition to be held next month compared to previous years.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that so far, a total of 20 countries had confirmed their participation in it with India showcasing a submarine.

India will exhibit its INS Sundurakshak, a Kilo Class submarine made by Russia, which was expected to be a big hit among locals and foreigners alike as no submarines had been put on show the last two LIMAs, he told reporters after chairing a meeting of the LIMA 2007 organising committee here today.

He said the biennial exhibition to be held from Dec 4 to 8, this time would witness 85 aircraft on static display compared only 60 at LIMA 2005.

"The maritime exhibition will also cover a 10,000-square metre area compared to only 7,200 square metres two years ago," he said.

Najib said among the countries that will be involved this time were the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Russia, Germany, Sweden, South Korea, Poland, Canada, South Africa, Australia, Thailand, Singapore, India, the Netherlands, Norway and France.

Among the highlights of LIMA 2007 will be the official handing over of six Sukhoi-30MKM multirole combat aircraft to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi apart from 10 Pilatus PC-7 Mark II aeroplanes.

The highlights of the first day include a battlefield simulation of an airfield seizure and aerobatic shows by the Red Arrows of Britain and the Royal Malaysian Air Force.

"We will also get to witness air shows by F-111 fighters from Australia and various types of military and civilian aircraft," said Najib.

In terms of attendance, he said that this year also marked a record as seven defence ministers, 17 admirals and 17 representatives from the participating countries would be coming.

He added that 12 foreign warships and 18 from the Royal Malaysian Navy besides 43 boats of all types would also be on display.

"We will not be able to estimate how many visitors will there (for LIMA '07) because people come to Langkawi for a variety of reasons. trade missions, tourism or simply to rest," he said, adding that the opening of LIMA'07 would follow the cocktail format on the night of Dec 3 as it was the concept practised by countries having similar exhibitions.

He also said that Malaysia had no plans to hold joint exercises with any of the nations taking part during the duration of LIMA'07 but the government would be making several announcements.

"They cannot be revealed now but are for the benefit of our armed forces and also the people," he said.

Asked why China was not participating, he said that it was their decision (China's).
