Putin outlined armament plans 2007-10-19
In his televised hotline address to the Russian public this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia in 2008 would start the construction of a new strategic submarine. He also said a new-generation of battle aircrafts, as well as a brand new strategic missile complex were being developed.
In addition, the strategic bombers Tu-160 and Tu-95 would undergo modernization, while three new nuclear-powered subs already were in the making. Vladimir Putin this week met with the Russian public in his annual televised hotline address. Asked by a military official from Plesetsk in Arkhangelsk Oblast, Mr. Putin said all branched of the Russian Armed Forces were being modernised. He specifically mentioned the new battle jet “Su-34†which was gradually starting to fill Russian air bases.
He also said that a completely new strategic missile system was under development. This comes in addition to the new Topol system, he confirmed.
The last months, Russian Air Forces have conducted extensive training activities with long-ranging bomber. President Putin in his address said the bombers Tu-160 and Tu-95 would undergo modernisation.
Russia has the last decades significantly cut its submarine forces. Still, new vessels are under construction. President Putin said the 4th generation nuclear-powered sub “Yuri Dolgorukii†would be finished this year, and that construction of the strategic subs “Aleksandr Nevskii†and “Vladimir Monomakh†was continuing. Putin also confirmed that the construction of another strategic sub would be started in the course of 2008.
With regard to intelligence, Putin said Russia would give “the necessary attention†communications and electronic fighting.
