WE WILL ROCK YOU: Killer Queen are to headline BAE’s concert in the Devonshire Dock Hall
TRIBUTE band Killer Queen will headline an Astute launch thank you concert for 6,000 shipyard workers and their families and friends.
The concert, on Friday June 8 to mark the roll out of the Astute nuclear powered submarine, is only the second to be staged in the yard’s massive Devonshire Dock Hall.
In the first last year, pop diva Heather Small was the headliner.
Killer Queen will lead a show which includes the show band Souled Out and a local band from Ulverston, Streams of Whiskey.
BAE had applications for more than 1,000 tickets in the first three days.
BAE spokesman Chris Nelson said: “Killer Queen are internationally known and were winners of an international tribute band of the year award.
“They have even played for the original Queen in the past at after-show parties and they have played all over the world and have an international reputation.
“It should be a really fantastic show.
“Souled Out, who supported in last year’s concert, are one of the top show bands in the country and went down really well last year.
“Streams of Whisky are half folk band and half a ceilidh band.â€
The band’s music has been admired by Scottish shipyard boss, Murray Easton.
BAE has used some Queen songs like We are the Champions and Don’t Stop Me Now as theme music for internal presentations in the managerial drive to keep submarine production on track. The concert is open to both workers and sub contractors, their families and friends.
BAE workers have to apply for tickets and the company says there will be “massive security†on the night.
For the first time the vast Devonshire Dock Hall will also be used for the after-launch lunch, as well as for concerts for shipyard workers on Friday, and for yard workers’ children on Saturday.
Up to 400 guests, including the royal sponsor who could be the Duchess of Cornwall, will have a sit down lunch in a big marquee to be erected in the hall once the 7,200 tonne submarine moves out.
BAE said it will save transporting people from the bottom yard to directors’ dining room in the main offices off Bridge Road.
