Volume I covered the LA class in great detail. Volume II follows USN SSN evolution and describes the Seawolf, and VA class, with a few pages devoted to the NR-1 (which was never an SSN). I really enjoyed the first third of the book the most, detailing the process for integrating the hull modules @ EB.
I needed some better detail for a hull I'm designing for a VA Block V, since our state's new USS Arizona will be the first that carries the four-tube, VA Payload Module. There are no official pics of the boat yet, just NAVSEA presentation renders, so this book gets me most of the way where I need to be.
Fate intervened two weeks ago when I was invited to dinner with the CO and ten of the forty-man PCU crew who were touring the state and creating formal ties for future events. I spoke with the Captain about the VPM and showed him where I was at in my design. He smiled knowingly and said he'd get me some reference photos as it comes together in CT. Until then, I'll proceed and go as far as I can.
If you're a fan of the newest USN SSNs, this book contains great photography and unprecedented access to some of our latest boats with detailed descriptions of the systems and crews that remain onsite, unseen, 24/7.
