SS394 Razorback- Guppy IIA with Atlantic Sail

Razorback as Guppy IIA. The IIA conversion removed one forward engine and replacedit with pumps and air conditioning machinery. Sargo II batteries were installed in the existing battery spaces (2 X 126 cells) vs. 4 X126 Guppy batteries in the Guppy II conversion. The Sargo II battery was developed to be lower cost than the Guppy battery while providing most of the performance. It was intermediate in size between the Guppy and the original Sargo batteries.

The original Sargo battery was a new lead-acid battery, designed to resist battle damage. It known as the Sargo battery because it was first installed on Sargo and was based on a suggestion by her commissioning commanding officer, Lieutenant E. E. Yeomans. Instead of a single hard rubber case, it had two concentric hard rubber cases with a layer of soft rubber between them. This was to prevent sulfuric acid leakage in the event one case cracked during depth-charging. This remained the standard battery design until replaced with Sargo II and GUPPY batteries in submarines upgraded under the Greater Underwater Propulsion Power Program after World War II.
