Soviet Project 685 Plavnik. Komsomolets. (NATO Mike Class)

The deep diving, titanium hulled Project 685. This unique one-off submarine, named Komsomolets, had an operational depth rating of 1000 meters (3,350 feet), and a safe depth of 1250 meters. The SSN was powered by a190 MW pressurized water reactor. It was lost in 1990. The two screws were mounted on a single shaft and turned in the same direction (not contra-rotating) with their blades offset. Smaller screws were mounted on the ends of the stern planes for emergency propulsion or maneuvering during docking. The sail had an escape pod which was used with partial success to escape the wreck on the bottom.
