The Kilo class diesel submarine has served in the Russian Navy for decades. It has undergone constant upgrades and improvements. A number have been exported to China, India, Iran and Vietnam. One was equipped with an experimental pump jet. The later Lada class was to replace it, but construction design problems led to a work stoppage.
