The postwar Tang class of diesel submarines, contemporary of the Guppy submarines. Re-equipped with Fairbanks Morse diesels to replace the failing General Motors 16-338 GM radial diesel engines. Equipped with BQR-2 chin sonar and post 1962 PUFFS sonar "fins" along upper deck for passive bearing and ranging, using the hull length as baseline for differential time of arrival of sound.
