    Japanese I-400 submarines

    Here is a very interesting source for information on the Japanese big aircraft carrying I-boat, I-400. It was written by Dr. Thomas O. Paine, who was XO onboard the I-400 submarine after the war when these big boats were captured and brought by the US Navy to Hawaii for inspection.


    A few other things you should now about Dr. Paine. He was NASA administrator during the Apollo missions in the late 1960's and early 1970s. Just after the war, he worked for GE on the liquid sodium reactor for Seawolf (SSN-575). He had a lifelong interest in submarine history and his extensive collection of submarine books that were donated to the USNA. Before his death in 1992, he was an avid member of a nascent group of submarine enthusiasts. Yeah, that's right, he was a member and early supporter of The Subcommittee
